We do tuition at our workshop on a one to one basis. Alec is the tutor. We take all categories of skill from the complete novice who wishes to start woodturning as a hobby, or from the hobby turner wishing to improve his or her skills. The rate is £18.00 per hour, with a minimum of 2 hours being required. We also suggest a maximum of 4 hours, with bookings being taken at least 4 weeks in advance. Pupils should bring with them their own hand tools, if only to get them checked for angles, profiles and ofcourse sharpness, along with some form of eye protection. Safety glasses can be provided where required. Bed and breakfast accommodation can be arranged in a local guest house where required. See below for accommodation links. |

I can thoroughly recommend a visit to Alec and Rosie and Alecs tuition on woodturning for a basic beginner. Their sign caught my eye when driving north to Ullapool for a day while on holiday. So I called in on the returning drive to look round the showroom and decided to book a two hour course of tuition before the end of my holiday. Alec was an excellent tutor for me, with his good natured humour helping to dispel my apprehension. I have had a taster course on woodturning about 5 years ago and didn't follow it up but remembered the pleasure and satisfaction of the craft. Before the end of the two hours with Alec I was able to tackle a small bowl in beech wood , and he has an excellent sense of designrefining my basic effort to a pleasing profile. I was carefully (and safely) guided on the use and potential of several tools, and although I didnt immediately retain all the details (there was a lot to take in for an O.A.P. memory like mine). I later read up on the theory in books recommended by Alec and have since done some items on a small lathe with great pleasure. Many thanks for an unusual treat on my holiday and an additional potential hobby.
Every good wish to you both, Barbara (Winkfield) Silverdale, Lancs.

Picture taken at a demonstration in Aberdeen, at The Grampian Woodturners Club, which was held in the St Devenicks Church hall, Cults, Aberdeen. Looking on intently are some of the club members, as Alec hollows out the inside of a natural edged Laburmum bowl. The c.c. camera was providing pictures to the TV alongside in close up of the hollowing procedure. |

Alecs demonstration skills are of the most professional; well researched and prepared. He has the essential ability to transfer his enthusiasm to his audience and his wry sense of humour is often used to emphasise some particular point. Alecs approachable style makes his audience feel part of his demonstration.
